How to choose a tour operator in Türkiye
We have an obvious interest in you booking with us. So instead of a sales page, here is the checklist we would give a friend — including the parts that do not flatter us.
1. Check the licence, not the website
Anyone can build a handsome travel website in a weekend. Not everyone can produce a TÜRSAB registry number. Selling tours in Türkiye without one is illegal, and the licence is what gives you recourse if something goes wrong.
Ask for two things: the registry number and the registered company name. Then check them at tursab.org.tr. Ours are 15746 and Gezginol Turizm ve Ticaret Limited Şirketi, and they are printed at the bottom of every page of this site and all ten of our others.
2. Find out who is actually guiding you
In Türkiye, professional tour guiding is a licensed profession with a real qualification behind it, and the big archaeological sites enforce it. Ask whether your guide is licensed, and how long they have worked the site you are visiting. Twenty years at Ephesus is a different product from a first season.
3. Ask exactly what the price includes
The three questions that separate a good day from a bad one:
- Are entrance fees included? Site tickets in Türkiye are not trivial, and "tour price" sometimes means the vehicle only.
- How many people share the guide? "Small group" can mean six or twenty-six.
- What is the pace? Ask how long you actually get at each site, and whether the plan can flex on the day. A good operator will tell you plainly.

- Get entrance fees, group size and the day's plan in writing.
- Book balloon flights and high-season Ephesus days well ahead.
- Prefer a reply written by a human who answers your actual question.
4. Judge the reply, not the brochure
Send one specific question before you book — something only a person who knows the place could answer. "We arrive at 7am on a Tuesday in August with a nine-year-old; is that too hot for Ephesus?" A good operator answers it directly, tells you what they would do instead, and does not simply paste a package.
That is the whole test, really. Everything else — the photographs, the badges, the superlatives — is decoration.
5. Remember that "best" is not one thing
The best operator for a cruise passenger with six hours ashore is not the best one for a pilgrimage group with a fortnight. Ask who the operator normally serves. We are strongest on the Aegean — Ephesus above all — which is exactly why we did not build one website pretending to be an expert on all of Türkiye.

What is TÜRSAB and why does it matter?
TÜRSAB is the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies. Selling tours in Türkiye legally requires a TÜRSAB licence, which carries registration, insurance obligations and a complaints process. An operator who cannot give you a registry number is either not licensed or not telling you — both are reasons to walk away.

Why are some Türkiye tours so much cheaper?
Usually it comes down to group size and what is included in the figure. A day shared with thirty other travellers, or one where site entrance tickets and lunch are charged separately, will always quote lower than a private day with everything built in. The useful thing is to compare like with like: ask how many people share the guide, whether the guide is licensed, and exactly what the price covers.
Should I book a tour in advance or on arrival?
For popular sites in high season — Ephesus in July and August, Cappadocia balloons at any time — book ahead. Balloon flights in particular sell out and are weather-dependent, so leaving it to chance on the day is how people miss them entirely.
Do I need a licensed guide, or just a driver?
At major archaeological sites, professional guiding is a licensed profession in Türkiye and enforced. A driver can get you to Ephesus; only a licensed guide can properly take you through it.
